Giuseppe Matarese graduated in Medicine and Surgery in 1994 from the Federico II University of Naples, subsequently obtaining a specialization in Clinical Pathology in 1999 and a doctorate in Endocrinological and Metabolic Sciences in 2004. He carried out his training period abroad during specialization at the Immunology department of the Royal Postgraduate Medical School, Hammersmith Hospital in London, returning in 1998.
He was the beneficiary of two Telethon-JDRF projects on juvenile type I diabetes and received numerous research funding including two grants from the European Research Council (ERC). After over 10 years of activity as a CNR researcher, Giuseppe Matarese obtained the qualification of full professor of General Pathology in 2010, first at the University of Bari, then at the University of Salerno. Since 2016 he has been full professor of general pathology and immunology at the department of Molecular Medicine and Medical Biotechnology of the Federico II University of Naples.
Main objective of his investigations are the understanding of the basic mechanisms of how metabolism controls susceptibility to autoimmune diseases and infections.
