Gianluigi Franci

Gianluigi Franci is Associate Professor of Microbiology and Clinical Microbiology at the Department of Medicine and Dentostry, University of Salerno (UNISA), Director of the Residency School in Microbiology and Virology at UNISA, and Head of the Microbiology and Virology Unit at the University Hospital "San Giovanni di Dio e Ruggi d’Aragona" in Salerno. His research focuses on microorganism–host interactions, with a special interest in viral infections, epigenetic mechanisms, antimicrobial resistance, bacterial vesicles, peptide–membrane interactions and the role of the microbiota in human diseases. He coordinates the UNISA unit of the ACT4 project and has served as scientific leader of the UNISA unit in the PNRR SEPSOT‑CODE project on rapid diagnosis of sepsis in solid organ transplantation, with a cumulative track record of competitive funding exceeding 3 million euros. He is author of more than 200 peer‑reviewed publications, co‑inventor of diagnostic and therapeutic patents and founder of the academic spin‑offs MicroNature srl and Epi‑C srl. Since 2020, he is consistently listed in the top 2% of the most‑cited scientists worldwide according to the Stanford–Elsevier ranking.
