Politecnico di Bari
The Polytechnic University of Bari was established by Law no. 245 of 7 August 1990. It is the youngest of the three Italian Polytechnic Universities and the only one in Southern Italy.
PoliBa was founded in recognition of the activities and prestige of the long-established Faculty of Engineering of the University of Bari, whose courses had been offered since the winter of 1943-44 within the University of Bari. The Faculty of Architecture, established in 1989, and the Faculty of Engineering in Taranto, established in 1991, joined the Faculty of Engineering in Bari almost from the beginning, creating a technical university whose defining features are solid traditions, a strong focus on innovation, and excellence in research and education.
Following the reform introduced by Law 240 of 2010 and the resulting amendments to its Statute, the Polytechnic University of Bari reorganized itself entirely on a departmental basis, with five major departments: the Department of Electrical and Information Engineering; the Department of Mechanics, Mathematics and Management; the Interuniversity Department of Physics “Michelangelo Merlin”; the Department of Civil Engineering and Architecture Sciences; and the Department of Civil, Environmental, Land, Building Engineering and Chemistry.

Università degli Studi di Messina
The University of Messina was founded in 1548 by Pope Paul III and, from its very origins, has been a privileged place for exchange among different cultures. Just over a century later, in 1678, the University was closed following the anti-Spanish revolt. At that time, the University represented the city’s most significant political and cultural expression and counted among its professors Giovanni Alfonso Borelli, Pietro Castelli, Giovan Battista Cortesi, Carlo Fracassati, Giacomo Gallo, Mario Giurba, Marcello Malpighi and Francesco Maurolico.
The University was later re-established in 1838 by King Ferdinand II and, apart from a brief closure caused by the anti-Bourbon revolt of 1847, remained until the early twentieth century a fertile ground for major intellectual figures such as Pietro Bonfante, Leonardo Coviello, Vittorio Martinetti, Vittorio Emanuele Orlando, Giovanni Pascoli and Gaetano Salvemini. The earthquake that devastated Messina in 1908 destroyed much of the University’s facilities and equipment and caused the loss of many professors and students.
However, already in 1909 the Faculty of Law reopened its doors, followed in the subsequent years by the Faculties of Humanities, Science, Pharmacy and Medicine. Year after year, the University regained its vitality, successfully overcoming the post-Second World War reconstruction period as well, thanks to the contribution of enlightened Rectors such as Gaetano Martino and Salvatore Pugliatti.
